Officials in IDP camps across the country are reportedly involved in a scandalous sex for food scheme. The allegations holds that women and girls are being harassed daily with essential supplies and relief materials used as a bargaining chip.
According to the Chairman House Committee for Internal Displaced Persons (IDPs), Alhaji Sani Zoro (Jigawa APC) he said his committee had concluded arrangement to investigate reported cases of sex scandals in the IDP camps across the country.
“There are allegation which we are trying to prove. There are officials in the camp that take advantage of some young girls and women in order to give them preferential treatment when food and water are supplied. “I am not trying to make any particular reference to any organization. But this is highly irresponsible and unacceptable to us.” he stated.
According to Mr. Sani Zozo, Nigeria has the highest number of displaced persons in the world over, saying at present the country had about 5 million IDPs scattered in 21 camps across the country.
He explained that in North East alone as at December last year there were 2.3 million IDPs while 2012 flood displaced 2.1million people adding this was with the exception of IDPs from Bakassi.
Several incidents of rape, molestation and child trafficking has been reported across the various IDP camps in the country
