As the current Economic situation in Nigeria deteriorates, Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka has called on the President Buhari administration to declare a state of emergency to rescue the economy.
Prof. Soyinka, who spoke during a courtesy visit to the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in his office in Abuja on Thursday, called for the convening of an emergency economic conference to rescue the situation.
“The President should call an emergency economic conference, with experts to be invited. Consumers, producers, labour unions, university experts, professors, etc.
‘’I think we really need an emergency economic conference, a rescue operation bringing as many heads as possible together to plot the way forward,’’ the Nobel Laureate said.
He reiterated his support for the Muhammadu Buhari administration’s fight against corruption and blamed the current situation on years of bad governance.
‘’The economic condition of a nation, of a people does not deteriorate overnight. Something came before that deterioration,’’
He said ‘’a certain prolonged and unchecked process of attrition’’, was responsible for the current state of the economy and said Nigerians should not expect a quick fix. “Recovery is going to take quite a while,” he said.
Prof. Soyinka said he was satisfied with the ‘’target and tempo of motion’’ with regards to the war against corruption. He said government was punish the offenders “for the impoverishment of the nation, of the people and “who robbed the nation with contempt”. He added that the anti-corruption battle must be within the confines of the law
Speaking the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said he was pleased to meet the Prof. Soyinka again, though he said the visit was private, the minister said it was impossible for the Nobel Laureate to go anywhere unnoticed.
