President Muhammadu Buhari has raised doubts over the abitity of Boko Haram to capture towns and hold territories. He debunked the claims that Boko Haram was holding territory saying that the terrorists were not holding any local government area in the country.
“But for them to organize conventional attacks on military, police installations and take hold towns, I think they are not able to do that. They send groups to go and kill in vulnerable targets”, Buhari said.
Buhari who hosted the German President, Joachim Gauck at the Presidential said that the Boko Haram sect who were in control of 14 out of the 774 local governments in the country when he took over power in May last year had been degraded by the military.
“I have attempted to explain in so many fora that Boko Haram is not what it used to be. While they are firmly holding 14 out of 774 local governments when we came in, they are not holding any local government now.
“What they have resorted to is using improvised explosive devices to cause maximum casualties on soft targets as they did yesterday, doing what they are capable of doing now.
President Buhari said his administration is focused on the rehabilitation and resettlement of Internally Displaced Camps (IDPs), especially children. He explained that more than 60 per cent of the 2million people in IDPs are women and children while more than 60 per cent of them are children and more than 60 per cent of them orphaned.
“Some of them don’t know where they are from, they don’t know their parents. This is a pathetic situation the leadership of this government is facing because the least we should do is to quickly resettle those children; if possible try and identify their neighborhoods”, the President said.
Buhari commended the German government for its assistance and support to ensure the success of the last election in the country.
The German President who spoke through an interpreter condoled with Nigeria over the terror attacks in the country recently and pledged increased support of his country towards defeat of the terrorists.
Mr. Gauck announced a $15 million support by Germany for Nigeria’s joint forces with neighbouring countries to defeat the terrorists.
