We are ending import waivers for Dangote – Customs boss Hamid Ali announces

The Federal Government has disclosed plans to stop the current discriminatory import waiver enjoyed by the Dangote group.

Customs boss, Hameed Ali disclosed this at the budget defence session before the Senate Committee on Finance. Ali said that big companies like Dangote, and Stallion had no business being granted waivers.

He said that the situation where big companies enjoy waivers and small companies bear the import duties is a misnomer.

The customs boss position was buttressed by the minister of finance, Ms. Kemi Adeosun who said the ministry was also looking into existing customs duty waivers to determine their benefit and recommend for a revocation where such waivers does not benefit Nigeria.

Ali also disclosed the plans by the Nigerian Customs Service to increase salaries as an incentive to discourage corruption and expressed displeasure at the remuneration of men of the Service saying that some other non-revenue generating agencies of government receive better salaries that men of the Service.
