Cross River state civil servants on Sunday, May 1st informed Governor Ben Ayade of their decision to forfeit an amount of N3.8bn owed by the state government in promotion arrears for four years between 2012 and 2016.
The workers have asked the Governor to use the money for the development of the state. Speaking on behalf of the workers the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr. John Ushie made the announcement during the 2016 May Day celebration in Calabar.
The workers said they are impressed by the prompt payment of salaries by the Governor and have decided to make sacrifices towards the projects and ambitions of the governor which will bring development to the state.
Ushie said, “The labour leaders and workers have observed with kin interest the enormous responsibilities shouldered by Governor Ben Ayade of the state in the area of projects.
“Following this development, workers have decided to support this administration by sacrificing all monies accruing from arrears of promotion within 2012-2016 to the tune of about N3.8bn.
“The organised labour in the state are grateful to Governor Ayade for the prompt payment of workers’ salaries in the state.”
Governor Ayade who was grateful to the civil servants also says he will work to reconcile any grievances between the government and the NLC.
