Iberia Airline has stopped its operations in Nigeria. The Spanish national carrier has announced its decision to stop operations in and out of Nigeria from May 12, 2016.
The Airline in a letter to its trade partners has attributed dwindling passenger traffic for its suspension of Nigeria’s route.
According to the Regional Commercial Manager of the airline, Mr. Kola Olayinka, the airline said the last few months is the worst it has experienced since it started its Nigerian operations in 2014. The airline specifically noted that flights to Madrid has dwindled drastically.
Olayinka disclosed that the carrier’s commitment to Nigeria since it started operations in 2014 has never been in doubt and said it was tough decision reached by its head office following the wide acceptance received from passengers, especially those heading towards Spain and Latin America over the years.
According to reports, the refusal of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to exempt foreign carriers from its forex policy is also responsible for the pullout of Iberia from the country, as other airlines are mulling over the same decision.
